Eye On France: France On The Move: CNN Profiles A Nation
Luc Besson, Bernard Kouchner and Anne Lauvergeon among others, feature in a week of special programming from 2nd to 8th June
As both the French and the international community reflect on Nicolas Sarkozy’s first year in power, CNN International’s ‘Eye on..’ strand decamps to some of France’s most iconic landmarks to put the nation under the spotlight as it redefines its place on the world stage.
The Louvre, the Invalides and the Arc De Triomphe are some of the spectacular backdrops; Chanel, Areva and Air France some of the premium brands; and former French footballer Marcel Desailly, CEO of Dassault Systemes Bernard Charles and CEO of Air France Jean-Cyril Spinetta are just some of the acclaimed interviewees for a range of reports on the economic, social, cultural and political developments currently shaping the country.
As part of the week’s output, CNN is launching a major audience initiative to hear from viewers, including the French living in France and abroad, on what defines the nation today.  Those interested in submitting a comment or video on France and the French should visit cnn.com/france, and selected comments will be used in CNN’s on-air coverage.
The week culminates in a debate - ‘France On The Move’ - filmed at the Senate in the French capital with luminaries from the worlds of media, sport, politics and film including director, writer and producer Luc Besson; CEO of Publicis Maurice Levy; professional tennis player Amelie Mauresmo; minister of economy, industry and employment Christine Lagarde; and France 3 news presenter Marie Drucker.  Hala Gorani hosts the debate and will discuss the overarching themes from the week’s coverage with the distinguished panel of speakers.
“We are reaching out to the blogging community as well as inviting viewers to submit their views on France, to give an authentic shape to our coverage” says Mike McCarthy, CNN International’s vice president of coverage and feature programming. “’Eye On France’ brings our online, blogging, and video platforms together with our own reporting teams for some very distinctive programming where viewers have a real voice alongside some of France’s finest movers and shakers.”
The week of programmes is hosted by CNN’s Hala Gorani and Fionnuala Sweeney from various landmarks across the capital, while Paris-based correspondent Jim Bittermann will be out and about across France to bring viewers a selection of live reports and packages exploring the country’s role in the international community from global relations to diplomacy and business.
Their reports are complemented by CNN’s feature programmes which are also focusing on French themes: ‘The Screening Room Xtra’ reports from the annual film festival at Cannes; ‘The Boardroom Masterclass’ features president and CEO Nissan and Renault Carlos Ghosn being interviewed by CNN’s Todd Benjamin; ‘My City_My Life’ sees French actor and director Mathieu Kassovitz guiding viewers through ‘his’ Paris; while ‘World Sport’ interviews among others, former professional French footballer Zinedine Zidane and the  president of UEFA Michel Platini.
Each weekday carries a theme exploring a wide range of topics including:
Business: The business team looks at some of the world’s most famous French brands and discusses the nation’s game plan to stay competitive in a global marketplace.  There is also an examination of the bureaucratic constraints that some say harness the success and productivity of French business.
Culture: What is France’s influence in cultural terms, and is it on the wane as some international commentators have suggested?  The programmes examine the changing face of France and the greater integration of race, religion and ethnicity.
Politics and foreign policy: CNN looks at the increasing diversity of thought and ideas influencing the political process over the past year both domestically and on the international stage. High-profile leaders will be interviewed including foreign minister Bernard Kouchner.
The ‘Eye On…’ series has travelled around the world visiting Russia, India, China, Africa, Brazil and the Middle East.  A captivating look at France, its inhabitants and culture, ‘Eye On France: France On The Move’ can be seen exclusively on CNN from Monday 2nd June to Sunday 8th June.
