In celebration of Mothers Day, Fast Walk Group organized its first charity walk on Sunday, 28th of March 2010, in support of the Jordan Breast Cancer Program led by the King Hussein Cancer Foundation and Center.

Despite the unfortunate weather, around 1000 participants joined the walk, each paying a minimum of JD 1 as a contribution to the cause. Donations collected from the walk were approximately JD 1700 and will help underprivileged women in rural areas across the Kingdom get access to mammogram screening.

The Fast Walk Group, founded by Engineer Mowaffaq Maraqa in 2006, has become a well known group that walks down the streets of Amman every Sunday and Wednesday with an aim to promote the culture of walking for both health and psychological benefits.

On this occasion, HRH Princess Dina Mired, Director General of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation said: “The fight against cancer needs the full support of the community. This Fast Walk sets an example of solidarity to support a great cause”.

HRH also thanked Engineer Maraqa for this opportunity and for his efforts to support the fight against cancer. She emphasized that KHCF takes pride in raising community awareness on the importance of following a healthy lifestyle by returning to the healthy Mediterranean diet and avoiding ‘junk food’, which is responsible for an increase of cancer in the developing world, in addition to heart disease and obesity.

Her Highness also thanked every individual who participated in the walk to support the Jordan Breast Cancer Program, or donated to support underprivileged cancer patients.
She also thanked Al-Bashiti Hardware Store in Khalda for allocating 10% of the proceeds of vests sold for this particular walk to benefit JBCP.

For his part, Maraqa noted that many fastwalkers have been able to quit smoking, lose weight, and improve their mood while getting to know their beloved Amman.
