Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas' Fatah movement Thursday called for protests and a general strike in the occupied Palestinian territories on Friday over recent tensions in Jerusalem. According to AFP, the Fatah central committee declared in a statement the goal of the action is "to peacefully protest and to proclaim the attachment of the Palestinian people to their holy places and to Jerusalem as the eternal capital of the independent Palestinian state."

The statement also condemned what it called "the complicity of Israeli forces with Jewish rightwing extremists" and accused them of "allowing them access to the mosque compound.... while denying it to the (Muslim) faithful."
