A local branch of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's Fateh faction called Thursday for "the head" of Israeli army chief Shaul Mofaz after the army's assassination of a Fateh military leader.

"The blood of martyr Hussein Suyef Ebeyyat will not flow for nothing, and the head of Mofaz is wanted by Fateh and its falcons," the Bethlehem branch of Fateh said in a statement, referring to an elite armed wing of Fateh active in the Palestinian Intifada between 1987 and 1993.

Ebeyat, 37, the leader of Fateh's military wing in the southern West Bank, and two Palestinian women bystanders were killed in the Israeli helicopter strike on the West Bank village of Beit Sahour.

"Fateh calls on the people and its supporters for revenge and response. There will be no stability or calm, and the assault rifles will reach the Gilo settlement and all of the settlements," Fateh said.

Gilo, a settlement near Jerusalem, and other Jewish settlements in the West Bank, have been the targets of gun and bomb attacks during the past six weeks of violence in which nearly 200 people have been killed, almost all of them Palestinians -- BETHLEHEM, West Bank (AFP)
