The armed branch of a group that says it is part of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's Fateh faction said Monday it was responsible for the shooting attack on a bus in which two Jewish settlers were injured.

"Our group fired automatic weapons against enemy vehicles," the "Al-Aqsa Martyrs" armed group said in a statement.

"Our group monitored enemy movements on the bypass road before launching the attack," said the group, which identified itself as part of Fateh.

"Our group returned to its base safe and sound," it said.

The army said earlier that two Israelis were slightly injured when Palestinians shot at an Israeli bus on a bypass road used by settlers near an army base outside the Palestinian-ruled town of Jericho.

It is the first time that a group identifying itself as part of Fateh has claimed responsibility for an anti-Israeli attack since violence erupted September 28 at the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem.

Israel, however, has frequently accused Fateh members of stirring up unrest -- JERUSALEM (AFP)
