The FBI is interviewing as many as 50,000 Iraqis living in the United States in search of terrorist cells, spies and information that could be helpful in a U.S. war against Iraq, U.S. officials said late on Friday.

According to Reuters, the interviews, which are being conducted across the country, started several months ago and were projected to continue indefinitely, the officials said.

Most of those Iraqis being interviewed are believed hostile to the regime of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, the report added.

"We are trying to reach for their help. They may know something that may be helpful," one official said.

"Apart from those who may be helpful, there may be some whose loyalty is contrary to U.S. best interests" and the interviews might turn up information about terrorist cells or Iraqi spies, he said. (Albawaba.com)
