Portugal's international star Luis Figo of Spanish giants Barcelona club has reportedly agreed a deal with Real Madrid's presidential candidate Florentino Perez to join the European champions, the Spanish press reported Thursday.
"Figo is the electoral bomb of Florentino Perez" say the papers as Perez, head of Spanish construction giant ACS, campaigns for control at Real against reigning president Lorenzo Sanz.
Figo, who was one of the stars of Euro 2000 and spearheaded his country's drive to the semifinals where they were eliminated on a last-minute golden-goal penalty from France's Zinedine Zidane, has refused to comment on the rumors although his agent Jose Veiga has had several meetings with Perez.
Perez is ready to pay the $58 million payment necessary to enforce the clause in Figo's contract releasing him from Barca as Figo has repeatedly made it known he is looking for a better contract.
The appointment of the next Real president takes place on July 16 - (AFP)
