the First Abu Dhabi Corporate Governance Conference was successfully organised today by the Abu Dhabi Center for Corporate Governance (ADCCG), which aims to effectively promote and positively contribute to the development of the national economy by introducing highest standards and practices of corporate governance.
The one day inaugural conference was titled “Corporate Governance in the UAE: Current Realities ... Future Prospects”. The conference witnessed active participation from local and international experts as keynote speakers at the conference. The Corporate Governance conference comprised of three panel discussion sessions, pertaining to key Corporate Governance issues.
The sessions organised during the course of the conference were titled as ‘Local laws and Regulation on Corporate Governance in the UAE’, ‘International Best Practices of Corporate Governance’ and ‘Applications of Corporate Governance to various industries’.
“The First conference on Corporate Governance in Abu Dhabi has today established a platform for an increased discussion on the numerous merits of introducing corporate governance best practices in Abu Dhabi. The invaluable insights shared by the local and international experts at the conference have beyond doubt set in motion a distinct thought process, which will in due course of time lead to a higher understanding of Corporate Governance in Abu Dhabi”, said His Excellency Engineer Salah Salem Bin Omeir Al Shamsi, Chairman of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Among other keynote speakers, the panel discussions featured eminent experts which included H.E. Ali Rashed Al Ketbi, Deputy General Secretary of the Public Administration Directorate, General Secretariat of the Executive Council of Abu Dhabi (GSEC), H.E Mariam Al Suwaidi, Deputy CEO for Issuance, Research & Legal Affairs, Emirates Securities & Commodities Authority (ESCA), H.E. Rashed Al Baloushi, Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Operations, Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX), Dr Hoe Ee Khor, Head of Economic Development & Chief Economist, Abu Dhabi Council for Economic Development (ADCED), Afshar Monsef, Chief Corporate Officer, Sorouh Real Estate PJSC and Simon Copleston, General Counsel and Board Secretary, Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB), in addition to speakers from international organizations namely Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), International Finance Corporation (IFC) and United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.
The one day annual conference was attended by various heads of Government entities, business leaders, board members, CEOs, top senior executives and academicians. The content of the conference seminars explored various angles of Corporate Governance including legal and economic issues and the possible challenges of implementation. The discussions in the conference also addressed the possible reforms in the code and highlighted the experiences of companies in their efforts to implement Corporate Governance policies.
