Five people were killed and at least 37 injured Wednesday when a bomb went off in a crowded market area in Sialkot near Pakistan's border with India, police said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

The huge explosion was caused by a bomb planted on a bicycle near Pull Aik, where a large number of laborers had gathered for work.

"Two people died instantly while three expired in the hospital," police officer Mohammad Ijaz told AFP. He said the condition of 10 of the injured was serious.

Sialkot is close to the border with the Himalayan state of Kashmir, which is disputed by India and Pakistan, and there are frequent violent incidents in the area.
