At least five people were killed when paramilitary soldiers opened fire Monday on crowds of protestors in the northeastern Indian state of Manipur, police officials said.
Issac Sahah, an official at the police control room in the state capital Imphal said hundreds of angry protestors had broken through a security cordon and tried to set fire to the state chief minister's official residence.
"The paramilitary troopers opened fire and so far we have confirmed five deaths and an unspecified number of injured," Sahah said.
"The death toll could go up as many of the injured are in a critical condition in hospital," he added -- GUWAHATI, India (AFP)
