Explosive weapons used in the conflict in Syria have placed the lives of five million people, including two million children, at risk, a non-governmental organization said Tuesday.

AFP reported that Handicap International said in violation of international law, densely populated areas have been targeted by all parties in the conflict, having a "dreadful consequence for civilians."

"Because of their blast or fragmentation effects, explosive weapons kill or generate complex injuries," said Anne Garella, the organization's regional coordinator. "The wide use of explosive weapons combined with the lack of appropriate surgical care in Syria has a devastating impact on people's lives."

The group also warned of longterm consequences from the explosives being used in the war, pointing toward unexploded ordinances that remain in territories several years after the conflict is over and permanently disabling civilians.

The Syrian government has repeatedly been condemned by the international community for its lack of concern for civilian casualties, using barrel bombs and, crude weapons and chemicals.

More than 220,000 Syrians have been killed since the start of anti-government protests in March 2011.
