Up to five people were missing Sunday after being struck by a massive avalanche in Austria's mountainous Tyrol region, officials said.
The avalanche struck at around 0800 GMT Sunday in the Oetztal ski area near Innsbruck.
"We think around five people have been struck," said Helmut Goldeband of the Austrian automobile club (OeAMTC), which also helping to coordinate the search operation.
"Around 100 rescuers have been sent out locate them and we have several helicopters in operation," he added.
Georg Obersteiner of the Innsbruck police told AFP the avalanche had been "considerable", but no further details on the size of the snow slide were immediately available.
The avalanche warning service had said Saturday that the risk of avalanches in the region was high -- INNSBRUCK (AFP)
