ALBAWABA - According to the UN's World Food Programme (WFP), more than 300 people have been killed due to the overwhelming flash floods that swarmed through Afghanistan across multiple provinces.

Authorities declared a state of emergency as search and rescue teams were dispatched to the stricken areas. "Flash floods ravage #Afghanistan, killing more than 300 people in Baghlan and destroying more than 1000 houses," the WFP said on X.

"This has been one of many floods over the last few weeks, due to unusually heavy rainfall," the UN food program continued.

According to the World Food Programme, northern Baghlan province was among the areas hit the hardest by the flash floods, with over 300 people killed and hundreds of homes destroyed or damaged.

Rana Deraz, a communications officer for the WFP in Afghanistan stated: "On current information: in Baghlan province there are 311 fatalities, 2,011 houses destroyed and 2,800 houses damaged,".

According to Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid, downpours triggered floods in four provinces, destroying 2,500 to 3,000 homes and killing hundreds of livestock as well as damaging highways and infrastructure.

"Rescue teams have already reached all the affected areas. They have taken the injured to hospitals by helicopters as roads were closed due to heavy flooding," Mujahid stated.

"We requested all the Afghan people to come forward and help the victims of the flood, which caused severe damages and destroyed entire villages in some areas," Mujahid said.

Social media users posted multiple videos and pictures showing the severe damage that swamped residential blocks across the affected areas, with houses being swept away due to dashing floods.
