Floods triggered by torrential rains and overflowing rivers have inflicted some $76 billion worth of damage in the northeastern Iranian province of Khorassan, reported the official Iranian news agency, IRNA, on Tuesday.
Mohammad Maqdoori, deputy governor general of the province, told IRNA that $32 billion of the total losses was related to damage incurred by the city of Jajarm, while the rest was inflicted on the city of Bojnourd.
The death toll from flooding in Iran's northeastern Golestan province over the past few days has reached 240, with over 300 people reported missing, AFP and IRNA said.
Forty of the dead were found in a dam in the province, where floods in recent days have caused serious damage, destroying houses, roads, farmland and livestock.
The army has been called in to help, with some 15 military helicopters participating in rescue efforts.
The rescue foreces are distributing food, blankets and tents, while helping with the evacuation of victims - 15,000 people so far.
The floods have been the worst in Golestan province in 200 years, according to state media.
