Former Iran President Calls for Legalization of Satellite Dishes

Former Iranian president and current head of the state expediency council, Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, characterized satellite communication as a necessity in the lives of people, reported Iran News Agency (IRNA).

"We must enjoy all communication media like the satellite, make use of its advantages and not be entrapped by its disadvantages," he was quoted as saying.

Iran has passed a strict law prohibiting the use of satellite dishes since the 1979 Islamic revolution, saying it is part of a plot hatched by enemies to deviate people, particularly the young, from the right path, said IRNA.

But, despite the taboo, it is of common knowledge that many, particularly in upper-class districts in the megalopolis, enjoy programs broadcast by satellites.

Rafsanjani called on the broadcasting network to sharpen its efforts to make unity of the people and the government an eternal facet of Iranian life, IRNA added - Albawaba.com
