Former President George Bush, the 41st President of the United States today said that the Middle East faces a fundamental choice in shaping the collective future of humanity and emphasized the need for constructive leadership to forge a brighter future for the region.

In a statment issued on his participation at the upcoming Abu Dhabi World Leadership Summit on November 21st 2006, President Bush said he is looking forward to share his views on leadership and the Middle East. He will be joining a host of other world leaders at the Abu Dhabi World Leadership Summit including Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore's first-ever Prime Minister and current Minister Mentor, Gerhard Schröder, former Chancellor of Germany, H.E. Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi, UAE Minister of Economy and H.E. Khaldoon Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Affairs Authority.

President Bush said: “As a friend of the United Arab Emirates, one who respects that proud nation, I am very much looking forward to participating in the Abu Dhabi World Leadership Summit with other distinguished leaders this November, because I truly believe the region, and indeed the broader global community, face a fundamental choice in shaping our collective future.”

He has played a leading and prominent role in the Middle East peace process time and again and maintains close ties with the region.

Stressing on the imperative need for leadership and dialogue to solve disputes, President Bush said that the determination should be “to use dialogue to solve disputes, unchain our world from the ignorance and hatred of our forbearers, and forge a brighter future for our children’s children.”

“Will we permit the voices of extremism to pervert a proud tradition in pursuit of their nihilistic goals; or will we muster the political will, and the courage, to help foster the voices of tolerance in laying the foundation for a new age of peace and progress. To be sure, the former path will lead to an endless cycle of conflict and chaos – while the latter will lift living standards and offer hope to millions in the Near and Middle East who have suffered from the lack of constructive leadership,” he further added.

Ha congratulated the organisers and participants of the Summit terming the exercise as “positive efforts” in putting heads together to think of a better tomorrow.
