Four new sites harbouring foot-and-mouth disease were confirmed in Britain on Wednesday, taking the total number of sites identified to 22, the ministry of agriculture said.

The new sites were identified as two farms in Wales, one in the county of Herefordshire, west England, and an abattoir in Lancashire, northwest England, Chief Veterinary Officer Jim Scudamore said.

The number of animals slaughtered, or due to be slaughtered, is now believed to be 11,000, comprising 1,000 cattle, 8,500 sheep and 1,500 pigs, he added.
