Four University students, three women and one woman, were killed Wednesday in a shooting incident in the Chechen capital Grozny, the mayor's office in the war-torn capital told the RIA Novosti news agency.
"Many people were injured after coming under fire from a grenade launcher," the city hall official said.
Detectives were investigating at the scene.
Moscow estimates that between 300 and 500 rebels operate throughout the capital, hiding in Grozny's ruins during the day and attacking federal positions at night.
More than 14 months after Russia launched its military intervention in Chechnya on October 1 last year, up to 2,000 rebels continue to harass Russian checkpoints, convoys and Chechens collaborating with Moscow.
Attacks against civilians are also on the increase.
