The banned French Basque separatist group Iparretarrak has confirmed in a statement sent to AFP that it was resuming its attacks against the French state, claiming two attacks against local establishments over the past week.

Iparretarrak said it had carried out a bomb attack against an estate agency at Cambo-les-Bains on Saturday last week, and an attempted bomb attack against an agricultural producer at Aicirits, also in the Basque region of southwest France, on Thursday.

It had been observing an informal truce but warned earlier this month that it might resume attacks.

Iparretarrak has claimed several attacks in the French Basque region since 1973, usually involving low-intensity explosive devices attached to gas containers.

Its leader Philippe Bidart has been in prison since 1988, serving life sentences imposed for the murder of three policemen -- BAYONNE (AFP)
