A light aircraft belonging to a French aviation club crashed into the Mediterranean Sea off Libya on Monday after a mid-air collision during a rally, Libyan television reported.

It said the single-propeller, two-seater planes were on their way from Tripoli to Benghazi, 500 kilometers (300 miles) to the east, when they collided over the Gulf of Sirte.

One of the aircraft landed safely in Baninah, near Benghazi, but the other crashed into the sea. The fate of the two on board the downed plane was unknown -- TRIPOLI (AFP)
