Thirteen people were killed and one wounded in an attack in the early hours of Wednesday by Islamic extremists in western Algeria, officials said.

The attack took place in the isolated village of Boukaat El Hadjadj, in the Chlef region, some 200 kilometers west of Algiers, security sources said, without providing details.

The hardline Armed Islamic Group (GIA) has been regularly accused by the government of carrying out killings in provinces to the west of the capital.

Meanwhile, in a separate attack, five members of the security forces were killed and five wounded when several bombs exploded as they were combing the area of Theniet el-Abed near Batna, about 430 kilometers south of Algiers, for extremists, Er-Rai newspaper reported Wednesday. (Albawaba.com)
