Residents of the village of Silwad in the occupied West Bank district of Ramallah held a funeral Friday for a Palestinian man who was shot earlier in the day by Israeli forces.
Iyad Zakariya Hamed, who was 38 years old and a mentally disabled US citizen, was shot dead by Israeli forces near the illegal Israeli Ofra settlement at the western entrance to the village of Silwad while he was unarmed in his car. His body was released hours later at the al-Jib checkpoint.
The body was taken to the Palestine Medical Complex and then to his hometown of Silwad, where thousands, including his wife and three children, were waiting to receive him.
After his body was brought to his home, thousands of residents performed prayers before transporting him to the village cemetery where he was laid to rest.
Israeli authorities had initially reported that Hamed opened fire at Israeli soldiers, prompting the soldiers to shoot back. However, it was later reported that Hamed was unarmed at the time of the incident.
Most recently, a Palestinian was shot dead by Israeli forces Wednesday near Nablus after allegedly attempting to stab an Israeli soldier.
According to Ma'an documentation, Hamid is the 220nd Palestinian to be killed by Israelis since a wave of unrest spread across the occupied Palestinian territory and Israeli last October, many of whom were killed while allegedly carrying out attacks or attempting to carry out attacks on Israeli targets, or during clashes with Israeli forces during raids in Palestinian communities.
Some 32 Israelis have been killed by Palestinians during the same period.
Israel has come under repeated criticism for failing to carry out due process in response to alleged and actual attacks, particularly in regard to the apparent extrajudicial executions of Palestinians who no longer posed a threat when they were killed.
