Global shipping and logistics provider GAC Group has announced its establishment of a 50:50 joint venture with Laser Logistics (LL), South Africa’s leading independent logistics group.

The joint venture company GAC Laser International Logistics combines GAC’s existing local infrastructure and resources with LL’s 70 years of expertise in air and sea imports and exports to offer a more comprehensive suite of freight forwarding solutions to shippers and manufacturers from diverse markets. The three offices which are located in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town will have a total number of 110 employees and combined warehousing capacity of 25,000 m2.

Bill Hill, GAC Group Vice President, Logistics Services, says the joint venture provides GAC with a stronger operational presence in South Africa and reinforced the group’s commitment to the country’s emerging markets.

“Partnering with LL is the most efficient and logical way for GAC to take our brand to the next level in the local market since we started our operations here in 2003. Our expanded network through the new JV entity will also enable us to harness the growing market opportunities in South Africa,” adds Mr Hill.

“Customers will benefit from the extended market reach. For example, South Africa-based manufacturers, distributors and retailers can leverage GAC’s 50 plus years experience and expertise in the Gulf when they export into or via the Middle East region,” he concluded.

Michael Fuller, Chief Executive of Laser Logistics says his company is particularly excited to be able to extend its local clearing and forwarding expertise into the international market through the global partnership with GAC. “This will ensure consistent levels of services for our customers on a worldwide basis and take advantage of the strength of both operations,” adds Mr Fuller.

As the key economy driver for Africa, contributing almost 25% of its GDP, South Africa is a strong manufacturing and distribution base for food and beverages, tobacco, furniture, textiles, leather, and electrical products.  The South African government has committed to improve and expand the country’s infrastructure which will further drive economic growth, ensuring greater potential for both inbound and outbound freight.

Richard Ferguson, the appointed Chief Executive Officer of the new joint venture, added that customers of both companies will benefit from a wider range of logistics services which include warehousing, transport broking and associated trade financing services currently offered by LL. Customers can also look forward to more competitive rates negotiated through GAC’s global purchasing unit.

“This relationship will strengthen our position with existing GAC customers elsewhere who are looking to penetrate the growing African markets.  We will also be able to deliver added benefits to our current customers by offering them a GAC-to-GAC service,” says Mr Ferguson.

The new entity’s commitment to South Africa will be further reinforced through the launch of a consolidation sea freight service ex Singapore later this year.
