Palestinian intelligence service chief, Gen. Tareq Abu Rajab was wounded in a blast inside the headquarters of the Palestinian general intelligence service in Gaza City Saturday, Palestinian security officials said. According to the officials one of Rajab's bodyguards died and six people were injured in the blast.
One official said the explosion took place in the building's elevator as General Ghajab was set to enter it with his bodyguards. Security sources told Reuters the blast was an attempt to assassinate Rajab.
The wounded were driven to a nearby hospital in cars of the intelligence service.
This incident came shortly after rival security commanders from the Palestinian Hamas and Fatah movements met to try to ease tensions over a new force deployed earlier in the week by the Hamas-led cabinet.
At Saturday's meeting Hamas agreed to keep its gunmen away from the Palestinian security headquarters to avoid friction with the forces loyal to Abbas, a security official said.
The meeting was attended by Interior Minister Sayed Siyam of Hamas and Rashid Abu Shbak, the Gaza Strip commander of the security forces loyal to Abbas.
