The head of Germany's Jewish community warned Thursday against hatred directed at Muslims in the country in the wake of the airplane terror attacks in the United States.

Paul Spiegel, president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, said that of some 3.5 million Muslims in the country, only a "few thousand, a minority" could be considered Islamic extremists.

Speaking at a gathering of pupils from schools in North Rhine-Westphalia, he said: "We Jews know what it means to have to fight against prejudices."

After the bloody attacks in New York and Washington, everyone must contribute "in order that the world stays humane", Spiegel said -- DUESSELDORF, Germany (AFP)
