Ties between Germany and Syria took a downward turn, after Damascus prevented German diplomats from meeting with jailed Syrian-born German Mohammad Haydar Zammar, accused of being a logistical mastermind for the September 11 terrorist attacks, DPA reported in Berlin Saturday, according to IRNA.

"We still have not received an official answer from the Syrian side on our questions about this person," an unidentified German Foreign Ministry spokesman said.

He added the German embassy is continuing its efforts to gain access to the prisoner.

Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa confirmed last week that Zammar was in detention. He is accused of having had close links with Mohammad Atta, one of the suicide pilots who slammed a passenger plane against the World Trade Center in New York. (Albawaba.com)
