ALBAWABA - German Chancellor urged on Thursday European Union countries to increase their arms deliveries to Ukraine amid the war with Russia, which began on Feb. 24, 2022.

Olaf Scholz told reporters in Brussels ahead of an extraordinary EU summit, complained that the military weapons sent to Ukraine are not enough to fight Russia.

He maintained that military pledges by EU countries have been "far from being enough," while Ukraine is in desperate need to get more advanced weapons.

"The discussion must start immediately because we know that what has been planned so far, including concrete arms deliveries from the individual EU member states, is not enough," Scholz said.

According to the German Chancellor, Germany has decided to provide Ukraine with more than 7 billion euros ($7.6 billion) worth of weapons in 2024.

“But pledges made by the European Union as a whole are not enough. Now, we’ll have an opportunity to talk about this, I’m glad about that. Today is not the day for a decision on this matter. But each of us must look into this, see what additional contribution we can make so that we can reach an understanding,” he added.

The EU leaders could not settle in December on the Ukraine aid package due to opposition from Hungary.
