THE GODFATHER MARATHON ON MOVIETIME THIS AUGUST

Published August 6th, 2006 - 09:40 GMT

This August on Movietime we are giving you the opportunity to enjoy The Godfather trilogy from director Francis Ford Coppola, his collection of movies are among the most celebrated, landmark films of all time. The films The Godfather, The Godfather Part II and Part III brought the world an unprecedented chronicle of a Sicilian family's ascension into gangland dominance. The films stand in motion picture history as masterful evocations of mood, character and story.

Mario Puzo's novel The Godfather was a best-seller many times over when filming began in 1971. The film’s story spans ten years from late 1945 to 1955 and catapulted Francis Ford Coppola to directorial superstardom, and popularized the following phrase, “I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse." The Godfather was nominated for ten Academy Awards, winning "Best Picture of 1972," and garnered an Oscar for Francis Ford Coppola and Mario Puzo for their screenplay. Marlon Brando won the award for Best Actor; his classic characterization is one of moviedom's most memorable but he refused to accept the award. The young Al Pacino played the role of Brando’s son and his portrayal of Michael Corleone sky rocketed him to fame. The movie was the highest grossing film of its time (until that record was surpassed by Jaws in 1975) and paved the way for epics and single-handedly created new standards for film-making excellence.

The Godfather is universally regarded as the definitive Mafia film. It is consistently ranked amongst the finest movies of all time. It is currently ranked as third best film by the American Film Institute, and, as of May 24, 2006, rated number one on the top 250 films on the Internet Movie Database with a 9.1/10 rating. The Godfather is on 11th August at 21:00 KSA on Movietime.

The sequel, The Godfather Part II, was released in 1974. This version of Vito is played by different actors at different ages, but the adult Vito is played by Robert De Niro, who won a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for a role in which; interestingly, he speaks almost no English-language dialogue. De Niro and Brando remain the only two actors to both win Academy Awards for playing the same character. Many critics consider the sequel to be superior to the original film in quality, one of the few film sequels to achieve such acclaim. The Godfather II is on 18th August at 21:00 KSA on Movietime.

In 1990, Coppola released The Godfather Part III. This film was successful financially, but critical and fan response was mixed. However, the movie still received seven Academy Award nominations, among them Best Picture and Best Cinematography. The film is also notable for the key role played by Coppola's daughter, the future Academy Award-winning film-maker Sofia Coppola, who was asked to play Mary Corleone on short notice after Winona Ryder became ill. The Godfather Part III in on 25th August at 21:00 KSA on Movietime.

Francis Ford Coppola's vision paid off. Not only is he the proud possessor of three Oscars, but he created three theatrical feature films that are a permanent part of that rare space reserved in history for true classics. Coppola has also stated that he has a rough draft for the fourth film in the saga of the Corleones. The Godfather: Part IV is said to be released around 2012, the 40th anniversary of the original Godfather. Don’t miss this great opportunity to watch the Godfather Trilogy, each movie a masterpiecein its own right on Movietime this August. (Dates to be added)
