ALBAWABA - Tensions have increased as a result of threats made by well-known Republican U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham to remove Yahya Sinwar, the recently appointed leader of Hamas's Political Bureau.
\Graham recently said in an interview with Fox News that if the Republican Party wins the forthcoming presidential election on November 5, their plan would be to assassinate Sinwar rather than bring charges against him.
Graham's remarks are in reaction to the indictment of six Hamas officials, including Sinwar, by the US Department of Justice for their roles in the deadly assaults on October 7, 2023. The senator praised previous President Donald Trump's Middle East policy, especially his response to Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, and blasted the current administration, saying it had lost its potential to be a deterrence.
Seven distinct accusations, including terrorism, are included in the Justice Department's indictment against Sinwar and other Hamas leaders, including former Political Bureau Chief Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed in Tehran on July 31.
Israel has been charged by Iran and Hamas of masterminding Haniyeh's murder. Furthermore, the Israeli military has claimed that Mohammed Deif and Marwan Isa, two prominent Hamas figures, were killed in assaults earlier this year; however, Hamas has not confirmed these reports.
