The Greater Amman Municipality has allotted a JD20, 000 semiannual award to be granted for the best district in the Capital. The award will go in effect next year, and is applicable to each of Amman's 27 districts, reflecting the quality of customer services provided by the district in a six-month period.

Manager of Amman City, Engineer 'Ammar Gharaibeh said the prize aims at enhancing the quality of municipal services, encouraging districts to steadily excel in their performance.

GAM City Deputy Director of Public Works, Eng. Mustafa Al-Louzi, meanwhile, held a meeting with executive directors and managers of GAM departments and districtns, during which he focused on the public services in the Capital.

Al-Louzi said that the 27 districts were divided into three groups, according to their size, population, daily human waste, professional licenses, and earnings.

The first group includes the districts of Marka, Basman, Abdali, Jubeiha, Kherbet Al-Souk, Al-Naser, Tla' Al-'Ali, Wadi Al-Seer, and Qweismeh, while the second group comprises Yarmouk, Al-Madinah (City Center), Al-Mawaggar, Marj Al-Hamam, Zahran, Al-Mgabalein, Sweileh, Badr, and Tareq.

The remaining nine districts in the third group are Al-Jeezah, Badr Al-Jadidah (New Badr), Husban, Shafa Badran, Sahab, Uhod, Abu Nseir, Ras Al-'Ein, and Na'our.

Al-Louzi noted that the winning district will be selected according to the higher rates it receives based on the indicators set for the prize. These indicators are customer's satisfaction (the highest rate is 30%), environmental assessment (20%), administrative performance (10%), public complaints (10%), accomplishing the executive plans (10%), basic operations (10%), quick response (5%), and overall impression on services (5%).

On his part, Executive Director of GAM Inspection and Surveillance Department, Eng. ‘Ezel-Deen Shamout briefed the participants in the meeting on the Municipality's tender to remove the debris spread within the Municipality's boundaries, particularly the public arenas that include rubbles left by development projects. The tender also targets all the rubbles caused by unknown parties and left in the open for long time.

Shamout noted that the project was welcomed with much consent from the public, since it helped in improving the common scenery of different areas and streets around Amman.

Gharaibeh, in the meantime, called on all directors of GAM districts to consolidate control of the unloaded debris, especially in the areas that were previously cleaned by the Municipality. He said that debris are causing environmental and social damages, distorting the general landscape, and bothering the Municipality with excessive expenses each time it removes the debris to the designated places.

Gharaibeh also stressed the need to intensify control of health measures during the Holy Month of Ramadan, and to increase inspection efforts made by the health divisions and the community health units in each district.

He pointed that Ramdan is coming this year during the summer, exposing foods to damage due to the high temperatures, particularly those that are in high demand, such as juices.

Director of the Medical and Professional Inspection Department, Dr. Mervat Mhairat instructed participants in the meeting about the controlling measures that the Municipality is conducting to guarantee the safety and health of citizens during Ramadan.
