Greek Anarchists Explode Bomb to Protest Turkish Prison Raids

A Greek anarchist group carried out an overnight bomb attack in Athens in protest at the heavy-handed raids by Turkish security forces in the country's prison dispute, police said on Friday.

A group calling itself the Black Star claimed responsibility for the homemade bomb attack, which caused minor damage to a car.

An anonymous caller telephoned a Greek newspaper after the attack, saying the attack was a protest against Turkish authorities whose intervention in the country's prison dispute has so far left at least 23 people dead.

Turkish security forces launched dawn raids on 20 jails across the country on Tuesday to end a hunger strike followed by nearly 300 inmates, who were protesting government plans to introduce new jails with smaller cells.

The protesting inmates fear that the smaller cells will lead to mistreatment by prison guards.

As the standoff enters its fourth day, Turkey has been criticized both at home and abroad for the raids and previous heavy-handed operations in its overcrowded prisons which have ended in bloodshed -- ATHENS (AFP)
