Greek special forces in Santorini amid fears of powerful earthquake

ALBAWABA - Greek authorities sent special forces and rescue teams to Santorini Island amid fears of a strong earthquake, The Guardian reported Sunday. The decision came following a series of seismic tremors, recorded in the area.

The British paper also added that people were asked not to position themselves near the shoreline as a strong earthquake could cause a tsunami. 

Authorities in Greece also directed people to avoid derelict buildings and leave swimming pools in addition to, refraining from gathering in big groups in enclosed spaces. 

Nonetheless, schools were closed on Monday as a precautionary measure, the Greek civil protection ministry announced amid fears of a bigger earthquake following hundreds of tremors on the Island.

It is worth noting that Santorini is a very popular island in Greece that attracted about 3.5 million tourists in 2024.
