U.A.E. based charity Gulf for Good turned 6 years old yesterday and to mark the occasion, a party was held in Dubai at Harvesters in the Crowne Plaza. Operating under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al Maktoum since 2001, G4G has raised AED 4 million for needy causes by organising adventure charity challenges around the world.
Chairman, Brian Wilkie said of the milestone birthday, “This is a tremendous achievement for everyone associated with Gulf for Good. 2001 seems like a lifetime ago – we’ve done 20 challenges in that time! So, we decided that we ought to have an event that would bring past and future challengers together, along with everyone that has supported us over the years. Harvesters have been kind enough to lend us the use of their premises free of charge for the evening, so we’ve got a superb location to get everyone together too.”
He continued, “When you consider that we operate with just three paid members of staff – who are supervised by a volunteer Board of Governors – organising 20 challenges is a significant accomplishment. Especially as our efforts have helped needy causes all over the world by raising US $1 million. We’ve built hospitals and classrooms, supplied ambulances and medical equipment whilst giving people a lot fun and achievement.”
This year, G4G is giving you the opportunity to join them on three adventures for charity. The Borneo Challenge in July will involve kayaking, biking, rafting and trekking to the summit of South East Asia’s highest mountain – Mount Kinabalu. Funds raised by participants will help provide underprivileged Malaysian children with an education. In September, biking enthusiasts are invited to put on their leathers and join the China Classic Motorcycle challenge to provide cataract operations for blind children in China. Then, in October challengers from across the Gulf will embark on G4G’s third expedition to Everest Base Camp to support needy children in Kathmandu and build a maternity wing for a hospital in a poor rural part of Eastern Nepal. If you want to make a difference in your life and the world, join a challenge!
