The Gulf and the Middle East region in general have now emerged as India's fastest growing source of visitors, according to just-released Indian tourism statistics cited by the Gulf Times.

"The latest figures indicate that this region showed a growth of 15 percent in 2000 over 1999, reaching a total of 110,800 tourists," said Gour Kanjilal, regional director of the Government of India's Regional Tourist Office in Dubai, which looks after promotion and marketing the country in the Middle East, West Asia and Eastern and Southern Africa.

"Actual visitor numbers from the Middle East are still relatively small in global terms, but it is the fastest growing region for India, and thus an important market for us," he said.

"Our marketing efforts are being stepped up and focused; the message is effective with the Arab audience," he said – Albawaba.com
