As part of Gulfood 2006, the region’s most successful food, drink, foodservice and hospitality equipment exhibition, the Emirates International Salon Culinaire Chefs’ competition is set to welcome some of the world’s most recognised Chefs vying for Gold, Silver and Bronze awards against a number of ambitious young talents.

Over 1,000 applications have already been received and others continue to pour in from Chefs around the globe confirming Salon Culinaire’s status as a truly international event in the culinary competition calendar.

Designed exclusively for trade visitors and organised by the Emirates Culinary Guild, a member of the World Association of Cook’s Societies (WACS), this event runs throughout the four days of the exhibition. Gulfood, organised by Dubai World Trade Centre, (DWTC) has been hosting the Salon Culinaire since 1987.

Paul Gayler, Executive Chef at The Lanesborough on Hyde Park, London, who is a published cookery author and has made numerous TV appearances, will be one of the international judges of the competition along with celebrated Australian Chef Scott Webster of Australian Culinary Consultants.   Webster’s work with prestigous hotels range from the Savoy Hotel, London, to Los Angeles’ prestigious Bel Air Country Club and Sydney’s Regent and Boulevard Hotels. He was also appointed by the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada to act as co-ordinating Chef in the athlete’s village at the XV Winter Olympic Games.

“There will be 20 international judges, all approved by WACS. Success at the Emirates International Salon Culinaire is most definitely an indication that a competitor could participate and excel in any world-class competition or culinary promotion”, says Alen Thong, Coordinator ,The Emirates Culinary Guild and WACS Assistant Director – Africa & Middle East.

This year’s event also promises a local debutant performance from the UAE National Culinary Team which was formed in cooperation with Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing and the Emirates Culinary Guild.

Key competitions for attending and aspiring chefs to look out for on the first day alone (19th February) include ‘Ice-Carving’, ‘Practical Arabic Cookery’, ‘Six Plates of Dessert’ and ‘Chocolate Showpiece’ categories.

“We have been overwhelmed by the response this year. The Salon Culinaire yet again promises to be a great opportunity for promising chefs to meet and interact with their peers, discover new production or decoration techniques and exchange information with industry colleagues and professionals,” said Thong.
