A leader from Palestinian hard-line group Hamas on Tuesday addressed by phone an Egyptian student demonstration to mark the second anniversary of the Palestinian uprising or Intifada, police and participants said.
Hamas "will continue the struggle against occupation," Abdul Aziz Rantisi told some 3,000 demonstrators in the university of the northern city of Menufiya, in a speech from Gaza aired through loudspeakers.
The students torched US and Israeli flags, and chanted Islamist-styled slogans such as "Islamic intifada in the face of Zionist aggression." Police had surrounded the university campus but did not need to step in as the rally broke up peacefully, according to AFP.
