Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas, expressed profound sorrow at the death of Syrian President Hafez Assad, reported Iran News Agency (IRNA).

Hamas issued a statement Sunday, "offering condolences to Assad's son, Bashar, his family, the Syrian people and the Arab nation," IRNA said.

The statement said Hamas was shocked by the news of Assad's death, calling Assad "a great Arab and Islamic leader".

The statement also highlighted Assad's "unceasing support for the Palestinian cause and solid determination to recover the entirety of the Golan Heights."

"On this occasion, we remember the deceased's enduring steadfastness in the face of Zionist and American pressures, as well as his support for the Islamic resistance in southern Lebanon which was instrumental in enabling the Lebanese people to liberate their land," said the statement - Albawaba.com
