A hand grenade was discovered early Saturday near a polling station in Pec, in western Kosovo, as the Yugoslav province's ethnic Albanian majority voted in landmark elections.

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), which is supervising the municipal polls in the UN-administered province, said the grenade's discovery was the only "security incident" to be reported Saturday morning.

Polls opened at 7:00 am (0500 GMT) in 30 municipalities throughout Kosovo and were due to close at 7:00 pm (1700 GMT).

OSCE election director Jeff Fisher said voting in Pec was not held up by the grenade incident.

"The only report that I have is that a hand grenade was found near a polling station. There was no explosion and polling was not disrupted," he added -- PRISTINA (AFP)
