Heavy floods in the southern Iranian Fars province have caused a still unknown number of casualties and huge financial damage, the official news agency IRNA reported Saturday. The floods, triggered by torrential rains since Friday, have severed power lines and uprooted trees in the city of Shiraz and filled streets with sludge.

Soldiers and firemen have joined in the rescue operations. The Red Crescent organization is caring for victims in a local sports hall, said the agency.
