Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah made a rare public appearance Friday to mark the ninth night of the month of Muharram.

Nasrallah thanked the Lebanese army and security forces at the opening of his speech at Sayyed Ashuhadaa Compound in Beirut’s southern suburbs for exerting efforts to secure and safeguard the participants in Ashura mourning councils.

General Security announced Thursday the arrest of a prominent Daesh (ISIS) leader and other suspected militants who confessed to plotting bombings and assassinations in the country.

The suspects allegedly confessed to plotting to assassinate Lebanese and Palestinian politicians and rigging vehicles to detonate in Beirut’s southern suburbs while residents there observed Ashura. The plot aimed to stir strife in the country and deal a blow to coexistence, the statement said.

Nasrallah is expected to make a second speech on Saturday around 10:30 am, the tenth day of Muharram known as Ashura, one of the holiest days of the Muslim Shia calendar.
