28 Hezbollah fighters and an estimated 20 Syrian Army members have been killed during clashes in the Syrian town of Qusair on Monday, Reuters reported.
This death toll is Hezbollah's highest so far in the two-year old Syrian civil war. More than 70 fighters have been reported wounded by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
This number comes the day after 40 fighters were killed during the same clashes.
Many funerals for dead soldiers were held in Lebanon, especially in the Bekka valley, where mourning civilians partook in funeral processions that flooded the streets.
On the ground in Qusair, reports suggest that troops loyal to the Syrian regime have retaken several villages around the city, which has always been a rebelstronghold.
According to Reuters, army forces have also launched attacks against the rebel-held Homs, which is becoming "increasingly isolated" in the conflict.
"If Qusair falls, God forbid, the opposition in Homs city will be in grave danger," said an activist who called himself Abu Jaafar Al Mugharbil, speaking to Reuters.
