High levels of mercury or lead have been found in 10 different species of fish and marine life caught in Bahrain's territorial waters, reported the Daily Star.

Traces of one of these two dangerous metals were found in hammam, safi, kurkufan, kanad, hamoor, janam, shaari and al maid fish.

They were also discovered in prawns and crabs, said Abdurrahman Musaighir, head of the Bahrain Center for Studies and Research’s environmental and organic studies program.

He said that the cases came to light during a survey the center carried out on fish pollution.

Musaighir said the problem of sea pollution needed to be tackled urgently because of its damaging effect on both people and sea life.

He added that mercury had a negative side-effect on the brain and backbone, while lead caused anemia and impeded children's mental development – Albawaba.com
