Yemeni security officials say Houthi rebels and their allies are advancing in Yemen's southern city of Aden, seizing parts of an upscale neighborhood, the Associated Press reports.
Speaking from the city, they say the Shia rebels, aided by military forces loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, had advanced along the seaside road in the neighborhood of Khormaksar, taking an area stretching from the Russian Consulate to the business district of Crater.
Officials say hundreds of civilians fled the fighting as troops loyal to the rebels went house to house searching for men they suspected to be fighting against them.
The rebels have taken control of large swaths of the country, forcing Yemen's internationally recognized government under President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi into exile.
