HP has announced the first milestone in the integration of Peregrine Systems’ asset management technology into the HP OpenView management software portfolio.
Less than three months after closing the acquisition, HP has combined HP OpenView Service Desk and Peregrine’s AssetCenter to provide customers with greater insight and control over their IT assets.
The integration helps customers improve IT service management efficiency, reduce costs and enhance service levels; and it forms the foundation of the HP Active Configuration Management Database (CMDB) strategy, unveiled here at the inaugural HP Software Forum Asia Pacific.
“HP is working quickly to bring the benefits of the powerful combination of OpenView and Peregrine technology to our customers,” said Todd DeLaughter, Vice President and General Manager, OpenView Business Unit, HP. “This first integration is a stepping stone to fuel the HP Active CMDB strategy, which will provide enhanced integration across the entire HP OpenView portfolio.”
HP already serves more than 3,000 customers with a CMDB that holds all relevant information about the system components in an IT service as well as the relationships among those components. This includes all incidents, problems, known errors, changes and releases, as well as corporate data about employees, suppliers, locations and business units.
HP’s Active CMDB strategy is based on industry standards and a service-oriented architecture that automatically synchronizes management data and allows customers to combine information sources for a comprehensive view of IT.
“HP, an ITIL expert, is taking an evolutionary approach to its CMDB offering by providing an open and modular architecture that harmonizes data across OpenView as well as third-party management solutions,” said Dennis Drogseth, Vice President, Enterprise Management Associates. “HP’s CMDB enables IT organizations to model and better manage complex interdependences across the full IT infrastructure to enable better service support and better service delivery.”
Benefits
Asset management enhances a chief information officer’s ability to run IT as a service delivery business and to flip the ratio of IT spending between maintenance and

innovation.
With AssetCenter integrated into HP OpenView Service Desk, customers can now identify, track and optimize all IT assets – from software to PCs to mainframes. The result is improved service desk productivity and enhanced service levels through immediate access to asset information.
Defining and controlling an organization’s assets establishes the foundation of an effective CMDB. Using HP’s Active CMDB strategy, customers can protect existing IT investments with the ability to integrate data from other vendors’ offerings into the database.
“The new HP OpenView Active CMDB strategy is exciting news to us and in-line with our strategic thinking,” said Jean-Philippe Draye and Mark Whatman, System Architect Managers, Avaya Inc. “We already invested heavily and are currently still investigating at Avaya how to build a sophisticated CMDB, which is the real cornerstone of our service management platform. The planned automation capabilities of the new HP OpenView Active CMDB will dramatically reduce the total cost of ownership for this solution while improving our ability to manage change and operations from a service-level perspective.”
HP’s Active CMDB strategy is to allow HP and other vendors to populate and consume data consistently within the database to better unify disparate data sources. To achieve this, HP will use an open and extensible SOA that is cost-efficient to maintain and enables the translation of data between different sources. Using standard web services eliminates the need for complex, point-to-point integrations to provide a unified view of IT.
