Police in the Gulf emirate of Dubai have seized 250,000 pirated compact discs in a sting operation, newspapers reported Wednesday.

An unnamed Indian imported the haul from Hong Kong and they were being sold for use on Playstation through a Dubai outlet, the Khaleej Times reported.

Following a tip-off, an undercover agent asked to buy 1,000 CDs and was told to go to a warehouse where police arrested the Indian as he handed over several boxes.

Charges of copying and distributing copyrighted material have been brought against the man.

Dubai and other Gulf emirates have in recent years tried to tighten up laws concerning copyright in a bid to halt a flood of fakes – DUBAI (AFP)
