The number of Iraqi civilians killed in attacks reached 393 in August, the highest level since April, following a wave of huge bombing attacks.

Figures from the ministry of health indicated a significant rise on July's 224 deaths in Iraq. The figure was also slightly higher than the 382 killed in August last year.

In April, 395 civilians died in Iraq attacks, including 105 Iranian Shi'ite pilgrims killed in bombings.

The number of American soldiers killed in hostile acts remained low at four in August, the same number killed in July, according to www.icasualties.org.
