Humans Threatening UAE's Coral Reefs

Published January 26th, 2000 - 02:00 GMT

A combination of fishing methods and scuba diving is threatening coral reef in the UAE, according to experts from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.

Khaleej Times daily reports that fisherman misusing their nets and traps as well as divers who remove coral are jeopardizing the coral's health.

A paper on the issue was presented at the 1st International Symposium and Workshop on Arid Zone Environments in Abu Dhabi. The paper stressed the need to generate public awareness regarding the importance of the reefs to the country's marine life. Currently, there are four marine reserves located on the UAE's east cost.
