The age-old but so far fruitless hunt for Scotland's Loch Ness monster got a technological boost Tuesday as a web camera, installed at the bottom of the Scottish lake, began feeding pictures over the internet.

Scotland On Line, in partnership with Loch Ness Marketing, a Scottish tourist promotion organization, suggested Nessie enthusiasts could hunt for the famous but elusive creature from the comfort of their desktops.

Pictures from the underwater camera, designed to accompany pictures from another camera installed on the banks of the loch last year, can be viewed at www.lochness.scotland.net.

"As the Loch Ness phenomenon is one of the greatest urban legends of the millennium, it is only fitting that we facilitate the latest hi-tech equipment to help us discover what really is out there," said Willie Cameron, a partner in Loch Ness Marketing.

"It will also give an opportunity for all those with access to the World Wide Web to see salmon, trout, arctic char, sticklebacks and anything else that may lurk below the dark mysterious waters of Loch Ness."

The search for the Loch Ness monster has been going on for centuries since St Columba is said to have encountered a water monster on the banks of the River Ness in 565 AD -- LONDON(AFP)
