A police conscript was killed and a low-ranking officer wounded in the early hours of Sunday when an explosive device went off as a police patrol vehicle was driving through North Sinai's Al-Arish, according to an interior ministry statement.

The officer was transferred to the hospital.

Security forces are battling a decade-long Islamist insurgency in parts of North Sinai, which spiked in 2013.

Tens of security personnel have been killed in similar attacks.
