Police here have arrested a naval commando in connection with a mysterious shootout at the fortified home of Indian naval chief, a police spokesman said on Wednesday.

Delhi detectives arrested Satvir Singh for "fabricating false evidence and endangering lives of others."

The arrest Tuesday followed a shooting incident at the house of Admiral Sushil Kumar just after midnight December 1, the spokesman said.

He added that Singh was produced in a court on Wednesday.

Immediately after the incident the navy said commando Singh, deployed as a security guard at Kumar's house, had been depressed and fired from his carbine with intention of committing suicide.

But the arrested commando had initially claimed to have fired at an intruder.

The incident caused a high security alert in strategic naval facilities in India.
